The Panathenaic Stadium Athens is an historic stadium located in the heart of the city. This iconic venue has been host to events since antiquity, and its rich cultural history is reflected in its architecture, which dates back to 566 BC. The original construction was built on the site of a much smaller facility that had existed since classical times.
The stadium was originally used for athletic competitions such as foot races and chariot racing, but over time it has also hosted concerts, religious ceremonies, political gatherings and theatrical performances.
The stadium was renovated between 1895 and 1896 with white marble from Mount Penteli, creating an elegant neoclassical structure that could seat up to 50,000 spectators. It is a partially enclosed facility with two long side walls connected by semicircular ends at either end of the track. Its main feature is the striking arched entrance on its south side, which leads into a large central area surrounded by tiered seating along the sides of the track. Within this structure stands a tall obelisk which was erected in 1929 to commemorate Pheidippides’ legendary run from Marathon to Athens proclaiming victory over Persia in 490 BC.
Today, much of its original design remains intact and it continues to be used for sporting events such as international athletics meetings and football matches as well as various cultural activities including artistic performances and exhibitions. The Panathenaic Stadium Athens is truly unique; it symbolizes both ancient Greek tradition and modern culture in equal measure, making it one of Europe's most cherished national monuments.
