About Hotels in Kotzia Square!
Kotzia Square, or Plateia Kotzia, is a historic square located in the center of Athens, Greece. It is named after Konstantinos Kotzias, a former mayor of Athens who served from 1885 to 1886. The square was originally designed in 1839 and has since been used for various ceremonial events such as military parades and political rallies. Located near major landmarks like the Acropolis and Syntagma Square, it displays some of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings and is a popular tourist destination.
At the center of Kotzia Square stands an equestrian statue of King Otto I, first King of Greece from 1832 until 1862. This imposing statue was erected in 1865 by architect Ernst Ziller and sculptor Leonidas Drosis. Other notable monuments include two bronze lion statues that stand at each side of the king’s monument; these were added during an extensive renovation project in 1930.
As well as being a popular tourist hotspot and serving as a reminder of Greece's rich history, Kotzia Square also serves various functions within its local community. Every Saturday morning there is a farmer’s market that takes place on the square where locals can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables directly from farmers from all over Greece. Additionally, many cultural events are held here throughout the year including art exhibitions, concerts, book presentations and theatrical performances - making it an important part of Athenian culture and life.
