The Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece is a modern structure nestled between the ancient ruins of the Acropolis and the city’s historic downtown area. This archaeological museum was opened in 2009 and showcases collections from the Greek archaeological sites of Acropolis Hill, Ancient Agora and Roman Agora. Not only is this museum home to some of Greece's most impressive archaeological artifacts, but it also serves as an educational center for knowledge on ancient history and culture. The museum hosted over one million visitors in its first year of operation, making it one of the most-visited museums in Athens.
The building itself is designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi and offers visitors a unique view into a variety of ancient civilizations. A total of 4,000 square meters are dedicated to permanent exhibition space; this includes 8 levels which contain regular galleries, temporary exhibitions and open public areas with spectacular views of the cityscape below. The uppermost level features a glass floor which provides breathtaking panoramic views while also allowing visitors to look directly down onto the ruins on Acropolis Hill below them.
Inside these walls rests an extensive collection of artifacts that span more than 5,000 years of Greek history; ranging from Neolithic pottery to Classical sculptures. Of particular significance is an unparalleled number of sculptures that once graced the Parthenon temple – now known as The Parthenon Marbles – which were brought here after they were removed by Lord Elgin during his tenure as ambassador to Turkey in 1801.
In addition to its impressive collection, there are also several technological elements at play within the museum such as audio guides, interactive displays and more; all designed for learning about different aspects related to each artifact or culture featured here. Furthermore, free guided tours are available throughout the day so that visitors have access to further insight from trained professionals about all aspects relating to their tour experience at this remarkable site.
